How to create a Route activity in Wittario

This guide shows you how to create, configure, test, publish, and share a Route activity in Wittario Studio.

1. Create a new activity

Log in to Wittario Studio.

From Home, click Create new activity.

You can create your activity in three ways:

• Create with Wittario AI – use AI to help generate your activity and tasks.
• Start from scratch – build the activity yourself.
• Import from library – start with existing content from your library.

For this guide, select Start from scratch.

2. Select Route activity

You will now be asked how participants should play your activity.

Select Route activity.

A Route activity places tasks at specific locations on a map. Participants follow the route and complete the tasks as they move between the locations.

Once selected, the Activity editor opens with four main sections:

Tasks | Settings | Route | Branding

3. Add tasks

Open the Tasks tab.

There are three ways to add content:

• Add – create a new task from scratch.
• Import – add existing tasks from your library.
• Create with Wittario AI – use AI to generate tasks and content.

Click Add to create your first task.

Continue adding all the tasks you want participants to complete during the route.

You can edit, duplicate, delete, and change the order of your tasks from the task list.

Tip: Create your tasks before positioning them on the map. This makes it easier to build the route in the correct order.

4. Build your route

Open the Route tab.

All tasks in your activity are displayed next to the map. Tasks that have not yet been positioned are marked Position is not yet set.

Select each task and place it at the correct location on the map.

Repeat this until every task has a map position.

Wittario will notify you if one or more tasks are missing a route position. All tasks must have a position before the Route activity can be published.

5. Choose a route type

Under Route type, choose how participants should navigate between the tasks.

Fixed route

Participants start at task 1 and complete the tasks sequentially, for example:

1 → 2 → 3 → 4

The participant's map only shows the next task.

Use this when tasks should be completed in a specific order.

Random start

Participants can start at different tasks.

This is useful when many participants or teams are completing the same activity at the same time and you want to spread them across the route.

Open route

Participants can choose which tasks to visit and in which order.

Use this when the tasks can be completed independently and participants do not need to follow a predefined route.

6. Decide whether participants must visit each location

Under Route, you will also find:

Require participants at task location

Turn this setting on if participants must physically reach the task's map location before they can open and answer it.

Turn it off if participants should be able to open the tasks regardless of their physical location.

For a location-based outdoor Route activity, this setting will typically be turned on.

7. Configure participant settings

Open the Settings tab.

Under Participant access, choose who can join the activity.

For example, Open allows both registered and unregistered participants to join.

Under More settings, you can configure additional options, including:

• Hide score from participants – hide scores and rankings while the activity is running.
• Participant certificate – award participants a certificate after completion.
• Automatic task evaluation – automatically evaluate applicable tasks.
• View participants location during the activity – view participant locations while the activity is running.
• Limit participant attempts – restrict each participant to one attempt.
• Prompt participants for nickname – ask anonymous participants to enter a nickname before joining.

If you use certificates, select Add a certificate to choose a certificate template.

8. Add your branding

Open the Branding tab and enable Use branding if you want the activity to match your organization or customer's visual identity.

You can customize:

• Logo
• Dark mode logo
• Primary color
• Accent color

Wittario provides a mobile preview so you can see how the branding will appear to participants.

For logos, Wittario Studio recommends an image of at least 200 × 60 px in PNG or JPEG format. A transparent background is recommended where appropriate.

9. Preview and test your Route activity

Before publishing, preview the activity to make sure everything works as intended.

Click the Preview button (eye icon).

Wittario Play opens in preview mode, allowing you to check the participant experience.

Review:

• Task content
• Task order
• Map positions
• Route settings
• Branding
• Participant experience

For GPS-based activities, we also recommend testing the activity on location with a mobile device before making it available to participants. This allows you to verify that task positions and the physical route work as intended.

When all required information has been added, the activity will show the status Ready for publishing.

10. Publish the activity

Click Publish.

Before publishing, review the:

Activity title – the name participants will see.

Participant access – who can join the activity.

You can also review additional settings under More settings.

When everything is correct, click Publish activity.

Publishing creates a live, read-only copy of your Route activity.

Your working copy remains available in Wittario Studio, so you can continue editing it. Changes to the working copy do not automatically affect the live published version.

11. Share the Route activity

Once published, Wittario confirms that the activity is live and ready for participants.

You can immediately:

• Invite participants
• Copy activity code
• Select Share & distribute
• Open published activity

Share through the Wittario app or web

Under Share & distribute, choose the platform participants should use:

App – participants use Wittario Play.

Web – participants open the activity directly in their web browser.

When sharing a web activity, Wittario provides several distribution options:

• Copy link – copy a direct link to the activity.
• QR code – participants scan the QR code to open the activity.
• Copy QR code – copy the QR code for use on signs, presentations, websites, or printed material.
• Download activity PDF – download printable activity material.
• Download activity banner – download an activity banner.
• Embed code – embed the activity on a website.
• LTI / LMS integration – use the activity with a supported learning management system.

If Do not ask for login is enabled for a web activity, participants can enter the activity without being prompted to log in.

Your Route activity is ready

That's it! Your Route activity is now published and ready for participants.

The complete workflow is:

Create activity → Select Route → Add tasks → Build the route → Configure settings → Add branding → Preview & test → Publish → Share

After participants start completing the activity, you can use Results & History to review participation and results.
